There is a long story to be told of coffee in Vietnam, filled with eastern european and Soviet geo-politics and global economic analysis. But (for now) I will save you from that. It is enough to say that virtually all coffee grown and sold in Vietnam is of the poor quality bitter robusta variety, not the smoother flavoured arabica sort we are familiar with in even the lowliest brands in the west.
